Black Box Recorder - The Art of Driving
Sarah Nixey - Luke Haines

La la la, la la la la la
La la la, la la la la la

You’re quite precocious
I know which button should be pressed
Let’s go out driving
I’ll wait until you’ve passed your test
We can get a hood down
Throw away those learner plates

You got the hang of steering
Now try stepping on the brakes

You’ve been driving me too fast
You’ve been pushing me too hard
You’ve been taking things too far
Who do you think you are?

La la la, la la la la la
La la la, la la la la la

Do you believe in love at first sight?
Do you believe in fate?
I believe the good things
Only come to those who wait
We’ve got to plan the journey
Eliminate all mistakes
Take the scenic route
It’s called the art of driving

Maybe wait until the summertime
Maybe wait until December
Because a heartfelt seduction
Lasts a life time

You’ve been driving way too fast
You’ve been pushing way too hard
You’ve been taking things too far
Who do you think you are?

It’s called the art of driving
The art of driving
It’s just the art of driving

La la la, la la la la la
La la la, la la la la la

I wish you’d learn to slow down
You might get there in the end
Don’t think the accelerator pedal
Is a man’s best friend
You don’t have to break the speed limit
You don’t have to break your neck
Another dead boy-racer
Cut out from the wreak

You’ve been driving me too fast
You’ve been pushing me too hard
You’ve been taking things too far
Who do you think you are?

Maybe wait until the summertime
Maybe wait until December
Because a heartfelt seduction
Lasts a life time

It’s called the art of driving
It’s called the art of driving
It’s called the art of driving
The art of driving
It’s called the art of driving
It’s called the art of driving
Just the art of driving
It’s just the art of driving
The art of driving
The art of driving
It’s called the art of driving
It’s called the art of driving
The art of driving
The art of driving
The art of driving
It’s called the art of driving
It’s called the art of driving

People are quicker when reacting than when initiating

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

From BBC news

Scientists discovered that people move faster when reacting to something than when they perform “planned actions”.

Perhaps this explains some of the differences between leading and following. Why some followers bolt at the slightest intention and why some leaders are constantly frustrated.

On following

Let go of everything except the leader

Under my skin

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

You try and get under my skin and I’ll try and get under the orchestras skin.

Worry

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Don’t worry about what I’m doing.

Worry about what I’m doing does to you.

Blatant

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

One of the pluses of having to travel for over an hour to other milongas is the conversations on the way home.

One topic that came up a while back, and that has made recurring appearences since, is the idea of the blatant lead. The lead that specifies where and how the follower should move to almost pinpoint exactness. A lead that lacks subtlety but more importantly one that hasn’t learnt, or been taught, to trust in the followers expression. I lead an ocho giving intonation towards its general shape and trust the follower in being able to express the step. I don’t need to micro-manage her step.

Boleos

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

You don’t do boleos, boleos happen.

Leading

Monday, November 17th, 2008

You can only bring the follower somewhere she’s been before.

Machismo

Monday, October 13th, 2008

One of the problems with the politically-correct “everyone is equal” world is that everything is nice. Just nice, no better. So when you dance with the charming lady, with whom you had and engaging conversation earlier, and you find her to be technically perfect, a joy to dance with but… well, nice and nothing more, it’s a real disappointment. Yes it’s great to have someone float like a leaf in your embrace. But when you know that there is something more… well you know that there is something more. (more…)

What are you thinking?

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

It’s an old chestnut, boyfriend and girlfriend sitting in silence when she turns to him and asks “what are you thinking?”. He usually runs scared at this point. Either he was thinking of something he shouldn’t have been (who’s hotter: Angelina Jolie or Daphne from Scooby Doo?) or wasn’t thinking of anything of signifigance at all (a much enjoyed state of being of the male of the species). In both cases he is in trouble because he’s not thinking about her, which is what she wants to hear. Walking up to someone and asking “what are you thinking?” is probably the least effective way of learning someones thoughts. You might as well stand at the rivers edge and ask “where are you going?”1

So too with following. There really is no point in trying to get inside his head (there might be nothing in there). Better to follow the stream of his thoughts, you’ll have a better idea of where he’s going that way.

1As best used as the closing line of the Coupling episode “The end of the line”.
