Tango is a language and when you go to Buenos Aires, you learn how the portenos speak that language. This is important. For example, if someone from another country was learning english and they asked me about an english phrase, I could say “sure, you COULD say that, technically it is correct, but a New Yorker would never say that”.
A perfectly sound statement but, as an Irishman, I have to disagree somewhat. The Irish don’t speak the queens english but that hasn’t stopped us making significant contributions to the field of english literature. I think one should be free to learn the language of tango and add a little of you to it too.
I hasten to add that one must learn the language, not just repeat steps phrasebook style.

“A deeper understanding of the dynamics of how we move and keep contact with our partner is more important than learning steps. If you can do that, then your improvisation skills will increase tremendously. You will also have a better connection with the music. [...] then you can go back to the patterns you learned and work on them from a different perspective.” (Raul Masciocchi)
Raul directs Practica X, one of the most popular practicas in Buenos Aires. His tango fusions traditional milonguero style with the new tendencies. He is now touring, teaching tango workshops around Europe.
The Ballroom Directed by Lais Bodanzky, Language Portuguese
A lovely Brazilian film set during a single night in Sao Paulo dancehall, from doors opening to lights out. The music is superb and the camerawork by Walter Carvalho is thrilling.
