What makes a good dancer?

A good dancer is not the sum of their steps.

Technique will only make you not bad.

Being able to earnestly and honestly engage with your partner is the mark of a good dancer.

what if the technique is suspect to begin with? for example you can always tell an argentine tango dancer that has crossed over from ballroom because of the way his head waggles. ever notice that?

and what if your partner is lousy?

in my town there are these two dancers who are lousy but they are into it and into each other and the way that they look at each other when they are dancing is a beautiful dance in and of itself.

but really i agree with your comment on technique when watching some ballroom competitions.

it makes me so sad to see how all of these beautiful, loveless, soulless automatons going through their prescribed gyrations.

especially in the “Latin” competition, and all those creepy faces they make. it’s almost laughable. almost.
