You can only bring the follower somewhere she’s been before.

  1. Do you mean that in terms of steps or in terms of the “tango high” or something else?

I mean that in terms of fundamental movements. Any step is composed of fundamental movements, ocho, gancho etc. But if she has never performed a volcada, for example, you will never be able to lead her into a volcada (nor should you).

I don’t think I agree. Beginning followers with balance and good posture (and I’m thinking of a few specific ex-ballerinas that I’ve danced with) can be led into ochos and giros without having performed them previously – and the look on a woman’s face when she successfully executes something she has never felt before is priceless…

  4. I agree with Iain. While I do not think a follower should be led into a volcada if she doesn’t understand the proper technique (for safety reasons – but also she’s likely to step out of it, so maybe this is a case where it isn’t possible to do), there were many times as a beginner when leaders took me places I hadn’t been before. It was thrilling!
