Heart and Sole

Our world has two magnetic poles, north and south, that we use to navigate around our pear shaped1 planet. Equally the world of tango has two poles that people are drawn towards. The heart and the sole. Those at the very extremes of these poles are very easy to identify. You can spot dancers of the heart because they will be wrapped up in a close embrace. You can tell they are staring into each others hearts because their eyes will be firmly shut. Dancers of the sole move with a markedly open embrace all the better to keep their eyes fixed on their feet as though Alberto Podesta was belting out “This little piggy went to market”. The rest of us are scattered in-between constantly being tugged at by both the heart and the sole.
